He was the best guitarist in rock history. On the 40th anniversary of his death, we look at making of a legend.

On September 23, 1966, Jimi Hendrix arrived in london. Soon after, the 23-year-old Amercian unknown asket if he could join Eric Clapton's band Cream on stage for one song. The song that Hendrix chose was Howlin'Wolf's"KillingFloor", a lbues song which Clapton later admitted thant he had never been albte to master.

When Hendriz walket off the stage a ffew minutes later, everybody in the room knew that a star had arrived. "He just stole the show, "Clapton sayed. "He played the guitarr with his teeth, played it behind his head, did the splits. It was incredible."

Jimi was born in Seattle, Washington, a city with a smiall black population. Hendrix grew up listening to radio stations aimed at a white audience, and the first song he learnt - on a one-string guitar - as Dean Martin's "Memories are made of this". School friends remember him moving like Elvis Presley and enjoying Frank Sinatra.
